What are aligners?
(tradenames: SureSmile, Invisalign, ClearCorrect etc.)
Aligners are a type of orthodontic treatment that use form-fitted plastic trays (as opposed to traditional braces) to adjust your teeth into a better arrangement. The dentist takes an impression of your teeth, and later a computerized model formulates stages between the starting position to a desired position at the end of the treatment period (averaging 13 months). In other words, an entire set of clear trays, exactly molded to your teeth at each stage of movement is worn in succession.
These clear aligners are worn for 22-24 hours per day and move your teeth gradually. Aligners should be removed when eating or drinking anything but water. Every one-two weeks (depending on the patient’s treatment plan) your clear aligners will be replaced with a new set which will feel tight initially, but will loosen as your teeth shift.
How do I know if aligners are suitable for me?
The best way to know if you are a good candidate for aligners is to have a consultation with your dentist. They will be able to talk to you about your treatment goals and provide more information about what your teeth will look like.
What are the benefits of aligners over traditional braces?
- Aligners are virtually transparent – almost invisible compared to braces
- They can be taken in and out with ease for eating
- Easy to floss or brush teeth
- No wires or brackets to irritate the inside of your mouth
