Dental Implants

Dental implants are like artificial roots made of very durable material such as titanium.  These “roots” once fused to the jawbone provide a very strong foundation for the replacement teeth.  The procedure for implants is done in stages:

  •  Implant fixture – a screw-like piece is surgically inserted into the bone.  A healing period (2-6 months) follows to allow osseointegration whereby natural bone and the artificial implant form a structural bond.
  • Abutment placement – an intermediate material that is attached to the implant fixture.  It offers the connection between the implant fixture and the final artificial tooth.
  • Prosthetic or false teeth such as a crown, bridge or denture is inserted.

Dental implants are commonly preferred for the single tooth replacement but can also be indicated to support a bridge or removable denture. The dental implant offers an excellent solution for missing teeth in terms of durability but also allows for a very natural looking smile restoration. If you have missing teeth, ask your dental provider if you are a good candidate for dental implants.
